Discover Zimbabwe: Six Destinations Worth the Drive

Harare is home, but Zimbabwe is the whole story. From the granite hills of Masvingo to the thunder of Victoria Falls, this country rewards anyone willing to fill a tank and leave the city behind. Here is our guide to the destinations every Zimbabwean, and every visitor, should have on their list this year.

Victoria Falls: the one you owe yourself

Mosi-oa-Tunya, the Smoke that Thunders, remains the single most spectacular sight in southern Africa. Go between February and May when the Zambezi is full and the spray can be seen from kilometres away. Beyond the Falls themselves there is white water rafting, sunset cruises and one of the best craft markets in the country.

Hwange: elephants without the crowds

Zimbabwe’s largest national park carries one of the biggest elephant populations on earth. A long weekend in Hwange delivers safari moments that visitors pay thousands for elsewhere in Africa, at a fraction of the cost.

Kariba: the lake that feels like the sea

Houseboats, tiger fishing and sunsets that turn the whole sky copper. Kariba is where Harare goes to switch off its phone. Book a houseboat with friends and split the cost; it is more affordable than most people assume.

Masvingo: walk through history

Great Zimbabwe is the reason the country carries its name. The stone city is over six hundred years old and walking its passages is something no photograph prepares you for. Pair it with a stop at Lake Mutirikwi.

Nyanga: mountains, mist and trout

The Eastern Highlands are Zimbabwe’s best kept secret. Nyanga means cool air, waterfalls, mountain hikes and fireside evenings. World’s View at sunrise is worth the early alarm.

Bulawayo: the city of kings

Wide avenues, colonial architecture and a creative scene on the rise. Use Bulawayo as your gateway to the Matobo Hills, a UNESCO site of balancing rocks and ancient rock art.

Every destination here has listings on Hararelife, with more added monthly. Start with our Harare guide covering 250 locations, then browse Bulawayo, Hwange, Kariba and Masvingo. Pack light, go far.
